In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic as an older adult, you may have found yourself impacted in a number of ways. One of those is likely how you’re getting your exercise and staying active. For seniors, physical activity is of great importance so you can stay healthy, but with many gyms and fitness centers on pause right now, it may seem more difficult to do. Fortunately, there are plenty of exercises you can do as a senior right in your home! Let’s get moving below!
Get a Good Stretch
Stretching is important! Get in a good stretch before and after any of your other exercises you’re planning. Stretching is also a great exercise on its own, and you can even work your way into workouts like yoga to improve your balance, coordination, and muscle strength!
Cardio and Aerobics
Cardio and aerobic exercises are perfect for building up your stamina and endurance. Exercises like jogging, walking, jumping jacks, jump rope, or even dancing will all get your blood circulating and your heart rate moving.
Get yourself a pair of light dumbbells (or any smaller household items you have that are about 2-3 pounds!) and start working out your arms. Light weights are great for repetitive movements and toning!
Using Easy Props
Grab a Chair: A chair is an easy prop to use if you need some assistance for exercises like squats. Stand in front of the chair and keep your feet hip-width apart. Slowly lower yourself onto the chair and then back out. Of course, if you can do an air squat without assistance, that is great too!
Use the Wall: Walls are great if you want a little extra support doing push-ups. Find an open section on a wall, stand about two feet away, and then place your hands flat against the wall. Now slowly bend your arms and bring your upper body towards the wall and push yourself back out again.
