Seniors – Are you ready to truly live your best life? Sometimes improving your brain health is as simple as making some lifestyle changes! Read through our top 5 lifestyle tips below and learn how you can keep your brain active and live a healthier life.
#1 Get Good Sleep
Sleep is essential for seniors as they age – never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep! But even more importantly, studies have shown that poor sleep habits can contribute to experiencing greater cognitive challenges. Seniors should make sure they are getting a minimum of 8 hours of good-quality sleep.
#2 Stay Active
One of the best ways to stay active is to get outdoors and take a daily walk (or even indoors on a treadmill)! Why? Walking and staying active in general is great for brain health. When we exercise, we can lift our own self-esteem and release feel-good endorphins. These, in turn, can improve brain performance!
#3 Journal
Writing is one of the ultimate therapeutic practices. Not only is it good for your emotional wellbeing, but it is also a powerful tool to keep your brain active and healthy. When writing out your thoughts and feelings, your stress levels can be reduced. Less stress = a healthier brain!
#4 Eat and Drink Healthy
When you treat your body well, you treat your brain well too. This means fueling your body with all the healthy essentials it craves! You’re going to want to get plenty of Vitamin C from foods like oranges or peppers, or even from vitamins. Be sure you’re staying hydrated every day as well. Getting your water intake is critical to flush out toxins and improve cognitive function. Lastly, try replacing coffee with tea for less of a caffeinated jolt in the mornings.
#5 Talk to Other People
Stay connected and engaged with people as much as possible. It’s common for seniors to experience feelings of loneliness or isolation, which can lead to cognitive decline. Participating in social activities and continue talking with people every day are lifestyle factors that will help stimulate brain health!
