What could be better than helping your senior loved one to age right in the comfort of their own home? This is certainly ideal for both seniors and their families, but you will still want to make sure that your senior is remaining safe while at home. We’re sharing some in-home care tips with you below so you can best secure your senior’s home and help them live safely and comfortably.
Identify the Problem Areas
Start with a thorough walkthrough of your senior’s home. Look for any noticeably hazardous areas – Are there clear pathways throughout the home? Is there clutter on the floor that could cause a slip or fall? Take your time to make sure their space is clear to make mobility safe and easy.
Make the Necessary Changes
Handrails: One of the most effective (and easiest) ways to keep your senior safer in their home is to install handrails in the appropriate areas throughout the home. This includes the toilet, bathtub, and hallways.
Reducing Falls: You can help prevent a slip or fall from happening by swapping out regular rugs and mats with rubber-backed bathmats and anti-slip mats. If your senior’s home has non-carpeted floors, you can give them a wax with a non-slip wax for good measure.
Keep Your Senior Connected
Does your senior stay home alone for long periods of time? If so, then it’s a great idea to keep connected with them. Make sure they have a phone and that you are calling or video chatting to check in with them often. If you are particularly concerned, you can even consider installing a motion-activated security camera in their home.
Get Peace of Mind from a Professional
Bring in the assistance of a professionally trained and compassionate caregiver to help look after your senior and keep them safe. Caregivers can help with basic tasks like grocery shopping, medication reminders, housekeeping, and transportation. They also provide companionship and personal care.
