Wednesday, February 3, 2021

You probably have a lot of thoughts and questions if you have recently learned your senior loved one has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. This can be a stressful time for any family, but often time the symptoms of the disease can be made manageable. Read through our advice below and learn how you can provide the best support and care possible for your senior with Parkinson’s Disease.

Learn as Much as You Can

One of the first things you can do is to educate yourself as much as possible about Parkinson’s Disease. Learn how it will begin to affect your senior’s body and mind and become aware of the various symptoms to watch out for – and how you can help. Find out how the disease will progress and what you can expect in the future. Be sure to share this knowledge with your senior’s other family members and friends as well.

Have Patience and Flexibility

You will find that Parkinson’s Disease has a significant impact on your senior’s body and their movements and reactions. It will likely start to take them longer to do things than it normally would but try to allow them to retain their independence for as long as possible. You can begin helping them once they ask you, or if it is clear that they are in need of immediate assistance. Being patient and flexible are both important factors in this. Plan to spend the extra time with your senior for certain activities.

Be Supportive and Get Support

While you are certainly facing new obstacles caring for your senior loved one, always remember that they are too. Show them you care for them and are here to support them always. Choose activities you can do together and spend quality time with them. Keep in mind that it’s also okay to take time to yourself when you need it. Ask for help if you need some time off to recharge and refresh. Getting extra support will help you prevent caregiver burnout.
