We’re all trying to do our part during this COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. Some of us need to follow a more particular protocol than others. With senior citizens considered most at-risk during the outbreak, special measures are already being taken to ensure their health and safety. However, if you’re caring for a senior loved one with dementia, you will probably need to take further extra steps to keep them well. Read through our advice below and learn how you can best care for your senior during the outbreak.
Since you’re senior loved one with dementia is forgetful, they may need reminders, both written and verbal. Some examples are to hang up signs in the bathroom to remind your senior to wash their hands with soap after using the toilet. Set a digital reminder (with a phone or a clock) for your senior to take their medication for the day. Place out hand sanitizers with sign reminders for your senior to use them if they don’t have easy access to a sink and soap.
Keep Things Clean
Make sure that you’re keeping the common areas clean in your senior’s home. This means you’re using a good disinfectant to frequently wipe down kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities and toilets, handrails, and doorknobs and light switches.
Additionally, you want to see that your senior is following proper hygiene protocol and washing their hands often. They should wash their hands before eating, after using the bathroom, and after sneezing or coughing. If your senior should forget how to properly wash their hands, you can demonstrate the process several times for them.
Follow Social Distancing Measures
Do not let anyone in your senior’s home aside from their caregiver(s)! Even caregivers should be following the CDC’s protocol and checking their temperature before they enter the home. Temperatures should be under a 100.4 F and they should not be exhibiting any other signs of illness. Caregivers should also be washing their hands frequently and wearing masks.
Keep Them Healthy
While caring for your senior during COVID-19, you’ll want to keep their immune system as boosted as possible. You can accomplish this a number of ways, including making sure they’re eating well-balanced meals, having them get physically active, and seeing that they are keeping their stress levels to a minimum.
