Seniors who are looking to improve their memory or keep their mind stimulated should be challenging their brains every day. Mental health is a key part of being able to live independently during old age, and there are many ways to keep our minds sharp. Below, we’re sharing 6 of our favorite memory games that will help to exercise your senior’s mind!
Arts & Crafts
Mental stimulation isn’t always about words and numbers… Arts and Crafts works the creative parts of your senior’s brain! It can provide additional benefits, like dexterity maintenance, while seniors use their hands and fingers to create art.
If the mind needs to go on a run, this is the way to do it. Word puzzles work because they force the brain to make connections between words. For example: LOCK and PIANO. What is a word that is associated with both LOCK and PIANO? A KEY!
Since Bingo is already one of the most common games senior citizens play, it is an easy and accessible way to exercise the mind! Bingo actually helps to stimulate 3 major senses – hearing, touch, and sight. Seniors hear the numbers called, they touch their pens to their Bingo card, and they see the numbers on their cards placed before them.
Jigsaw puzzles can be a fun and effective way to keep the mind sharp! Not only will they help to stimulate your senior’s brain, they also can help them to relax which help reduce blood pressure. For some, jigsaw puzzles can even induce a calm, meditative state while the brain remains active.
Critical Thinking Puzzles
These types of puzzles will require logic and your senior will need to do some out-of-the-box thinking. Critical thinking puzzles will test your senior’s ability to use the information at hand to come up with a logical solution.
Trivia games and challenges are fun ways for seniors to use their mind and recall facts and history! The most exciting topics tend to be musicals, historic events, current events, and entertainment. These games can be played one-on-one or with teams!
