If you have been looking for an in home caregiver, you have probably come up with a lot of questions to ask the care provider or home care agency. Senior care providers need to know some things about you and your loved one, too. Your caregiver is going to become almost like family, and be there when you can not, so it is essential that a good relationship is established between the senior and the new companion.

Caring CompanionsWhen you arrange for home care for a senior, it helps to spend some time getting ready to enter this new relationship. Caregivers should be given as much information as possible to ensure your senior loved one receives the best possible care and attention – and has a positive, supportive relationship with this “new best friend”.
What sets great caregivers apart from all the rest is the relationship they build with the senior. When a caregiver is able to really get to know the person, they can become like a family member over time, and “be there for you when you can’t be”. To help establish a good relationship between your care provider and your senior relative, help them get to know each other.

Tell the home health care provider the following things to know about the senior:

  • Any illnesses/injuries or other conditions
  • Likes/dislikes and hobbies
  • Medications, and how and when they should be taken
  • Need for dentures, eyeglasses, canes, walkers, or other assistive devices
  • Any behavior problems and the best ways to handle them
  • Mobility issues
  • Special dietary or nutritional needs
  • Current exercise routine
  • Social life – friends, clubs, places

Some of these may seem obvious, like medical issues, while others are more personal. Both are important to the health and well being of the senior. Making sure your caregiver knows everything she needs to know.
